Thankful Thursday - Week II

Well, technically, it's week 3 of November, but I do not think anyone will fault me for ignoring November 1st of this year since Sandy made such a mess of things!!

Many, MANY here on the East Coast are still without power; (work just sent 7 more crews down on Saturday to help with restorations) but especially since a Nor'easter came in on Sandy's heels and just as people had finally gotten restored... boom, out goes the lights again...

FiberDoodlesbyK4TT has been able to donate this year, (thanks to wonderful clients who've purchased this month) helping many animals;  victims of this devastation.
(Many fleeing from Sandy, evacuated their homes leaving behind their pets.  Now these animals are in shelters and being cared for by organizations like 2ndChance AnimalShelter (from MA) in hotel rooms - now, with no electricity).
There is still a long way to go...

Another animal advocate, which I have followed for YEARS... is Sara of Crafting4Greyhounds.  This wonderful lady, residing in the UK; is a doodler... honest.
In her collection she has several in the KISS Series, including the Elephant, Puppy and Bunny, but those are for personal - her passion is crocheting for the hounds.

Sara, in addition to fostering greyhounds, works with several charities to insure that these majestic animals are given a second chance once their 'entertainment value' is over.
You can find her products here in her shop - Crafting 4 Greyhounds

from the United Kingdom we travel to Spain... Luziane is no stranger to the FiberDoodles by K4TT blog!  She's been featured here before for her beautiful fiber interpretations from FDbyK4TT patterns.

I believe I first met MAIu in 2011, but it wasn't until recently that I discovered her passion for helping children and animals!  Once you take a look at her Facebook page you cannot help but to be both inspired and enchanted with her creative eye and generous heart.

Submit your shop address and a brief description of your charity for review to fiberdoodles@gmail.com  FDbyK4TT will be showcasing Doodlers each Thursday, throughout the month of November.

Out of My Depths...

So .. I have an admission to make...
most 'gamers' are of the male persuasion... but, not in this household.

My 12 year old daughter knows more about Halo, Minecraft and Call of Duty .. than she does about clothing, makeup and boys.
Well, she gets it honestly - Mr. Doodle graced the pages of more than a few "Gaming Magazines" in his time..

So, when she asked me to make her a "Hunter" doll.. I have to admit that I was just OUT of MY COMFORT Zone...

Left 4 Dead - "Hunter"
WallPaper by chitototoy
but... I knew just who to turn to...
My very dear and close friend and fellow designer, Erin of Erin's Toy Store

Erin and I have been close since she bought her first crochet pattern from me in early 2010 - so it only seemed natural to ask 'Auntie Erin' if she could create a FanArt doll (since she is so fabulous at it), of this ...
er umm.. thing.

and she did!!

Yeah, I know... he is SOOO much cuter than the original... but it's Amigurumi..
and as Doodlers found out very early; even Piddle and Poo (Number 1 & Number 2) could be adorable, in Amigurumi.

The Zombie Hunter Pattern is available in her Etsy.com shop as well as her Ravelry.com shop for a modest $3.95USD

Thank you Erin.  My little gamer LOVES her Hunter..
and I love you for taking the time to fulfill her wishes!

Do You Know What April Is?

It's National "Adopt a Greyhound Month"~~  (4 yrs and counting!)

One of my all-time favorite etsy shops .. from the other side of the tracks (you know, DOGS.. ptooey!) is a bigtime advocate of Greyhounds and for Greyhound Rescues  (proceeds go to helping these slender - and often abused - hounds find furr-ever homes)...
I knew that "Greyhound Adoption Month" was coming.. but upon checking my eMail this morning, got a friendly reminder...

This commercial, was absolutely adorable!!  and did it's job.  Cal, who is doing his 'video bio' back in 2008, found his furr-ever home not long after this commercial aired.
"In 2008, the Greyhound Project produced a series of public service announcements to promote greyhound adoption. One of the spots, seen here, featured a black greyhound named Cal who was looking for a long term commitment. Fortunately for Cal, he was adopted soon after filming. But there are thousands more pleasant and adorable greyhound just like him waiting in adoption groups around the world for their forever homes. For more information about greyhounds and where to find an adoption group near you, please visit The Greyhound Project at www.adopt-a-greyhound.org"
So, if you are looking for that special someone to help complete your life, and just haven't been able to find "Mr./Mrs. Right"; perhaps you are just looking at the wrong species. Contact the Greyhound Project for further information.

Holy Flippin' Smokes

I have had some quick 'testers' before, but Claudia set a record I think...

Flip isn't even done on MY end yet, but he's all tested and ready to be published ..  which I will most likely get around to doing tonight -
those who are eagerly awaiting Flip... blame the people!

I have promised the people a 'Day Out'..
The weather has turned here - spring is in the air and because the people are still considered 'home schooled' (although they do go to school for a few hours) - MCAS means they do not get time at school today..
Since one is missing gym and the other absolutely hates not being able to go to school for a few hours everyday  ...
I am thinking a walk to the beach may be in order .. and definitely a 'yard clean up'...
perhaps I will find something in the soil which will inspire me for even more fiber goodies!

In the mean time..
My very good friend Erin has a tantalizing little friend for everyone who is feeling the Spring bug's bite...

"The legendary, slightly annoying guardian of the forest... the Lorax."

Time Is So NOT a Friend of Mine...

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas Holiday and a safe and Happy New Year.
I've not forgotten you... you've not heard from me, simply because I was TRYING to get up a free pattern at Christmas.. then when that did not happen; I attempted to gather together a free pattern for New Years..
problem was that there is just not enough time in the day to design..

For Christmas, my parents came in.  Of course it's always a pleasure to visit with the parental units.. but it does tend to add a wee bit more stress to the holidays as you want to make everything so enjoyable.. well, at least that was MY holiday.
Then, as they left (which was actually a day earlier than they had planned), we got a Nor' Easter that came up the coast of the US and created havoc for several days after.  Right down the road from me, there were 2 homes which caught on fire due to flood waters.  Now, when I say flood waters.. we are speaking of 5 to 6 feet of water.  It is the price you pay (so they say), for living close to the ocean.
We escaped unscathed, but "Daddy" was very busy working 18 hr shifts.

With all this excitement, I've found myself longing for directions from other pattern writers to get my fiber fix!!  (Yeah..  I am actually following - stitch by stitch, will wonders never cease? )

Here are 2 of my works - the Booties/Blanket are for a Co-Worker/Student of the Hub .. and the hoodie (which is actually done in pink AND purple) are for the people - as they wanted something to keep em warm so they could play in the snow.  (Now all we need is the snow instead of the flood waters!)

Bella Hood by: Crazy Socks Crochet

I am working very hard to continue to bring you fiber goodies - it's a new year, and and I've cleansed my mind of past issues.
I will update as time permits!  I hope to see you very soon!

Pimpin' Out Other Designers

I've been told that I am 'harming my own potential sales' by directing my readers to other crochet designers..
but, I am the type of person who gives credit where credit is due.

And while I am currently working on two series/styles of doll - and my time is so limited during the summer months (tough with 'the people' - they are at that age where they need almost constant supervision)... why the heck NOT advertise other designers to my readers and followers?
I am confident in my abilities.. and I am confident in the abilities of others - I don't find it necessary to bash others to make myself look better... so why not share what I personally know about other great designers?

There is a young lady whom I have followed for sometime... mainly because I've got 2 kids who are madly in love with Pokemon'...
Apparently, she's taken the Pokemon' catch phrase of "Gotta Catch em All" and adapted a hooker's sense of uniqueness to it...
"Gotta Hook em All"

To date, OFF THE HOOK's WolfDreamer, has nearly 30 Pokemon' and a whole host of other Gaming Characters for your hooking enjoyment - (Not to mention the adorables  she's got in her Ravelry Shop).
I noticed tonight, that she's completed her latest - Umbreon, which happens to be one of the People's favorite Pokemon.. so guess what I will be doing in my downtime..

Please remember that designers offer free patterns as a courtesy and not a requirement.  You can show your appreciation and support by NOT POSTING gifts to 'share sites' in the hopes of obtaining other patterns - and if you enjoy a designer's work (and there is a donate button), donate a few bucks.  It helps keep the yarn flowing and the creativity alive.

A Day for Myself

Well, not so much a day to myself - but a day to recharge as I prepare to create my next design, which is planned on being the feline variety.
Most people do not realize the effort that goes into designing a pattern for others to work from.  It is very taxing, trying to make sure that you remember to dot every eye, close every closet door ('How to Make a Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwich reference) and cross every "T".
And while I absolutely LOVE being able to share 'MY' visions with everyone - I also love to be able to sit back and just FOLLOW someone else's instruction.

Luisa of Picuu, from who I recently purchased a little Spring Time Trio, is an exciting designer full of imagination and unique interpretations.
I have always loved her works and continue to watch her shop for the newest video game icons.. *hint hint* .. lol
But up until now, I had yet to actually make anything I had bought (or won) from her...

These two little rascals, who've already mistaken the dog as a potential mound of furry durt; have yet to receive names.. that should happen in about an hour.. when the people get home from school.

But, yesterday, needing a little break - I showed the people these bunnies - asked them to pick their colors and then cleaned the kitchen.. ...  did the laundry... folded cloths... THEN sat down to begin working...
this little bunny is INCREDIBLY fast to make.. You could make one tonight in time for Easter Sunday if you so choose.  BOTH of these guys were completed and stitched together in ABOUT 8 hours.

Hey Lu :)

I finally made one.. or two .. lol

Babies - Babies - Everywhere there's...

Babies..

Apparently, 9 months ago was a very 'Loving Month' as it seems every time I turn around recently, someone is popping out a kid.
My daughter's teacher, 2 of  my neighbors' sons, another neighbor's daughter, my daughter's dentist..
it's Baby City... and I'm not traveling down that road..
my girls keep me quite busy .. "thank you"
although, the Hub really wants to keep trying for the 'boy'...

Today the people had their dental appointments - and while standing in the corner of the office (because, although we are 'big girls', we aren't going back there by ourselves!). ..  .
I was able to get some work done.

The afghan pattern is from the Annie's Attic leaflet,  Heirloom Baby Blankets by Lucille LaFlamme  This blanket, "Radiance", worked up incredibly fast (well, when I was able to actually work on it) and turned out lovely.  Have to finish up the trim on the Fleece Blanket and then they will be off to my girlfriend's daughter's new baby-love "Abel".

One Down... One to Go

I am so very proud of myself.  Not only did I make my deadline for my daughter's teacher's Nappy Cake; but I also made 2 patterns for sale on etsy/ravelry.
Whoo Hoo.. so I should be feeling on top of the world.. ready to take a break and relax.  Hook a little something just for me... right???
Nope.. lol
Still SO MUCH TO DO!!!
There are more patterns to create and another baby blanket to finish up. St Paddy's Day to get on to, Easter...

But first, onto the photos..
Although I wasn't *exactly* thrilled with the color scheme... the orange/yellow was okay.. but ugh!  green???
Anyways..
My daughter's teacher, G-d love her, and her Husband decided to be *surprised* by the sex of their upcoming bundle of joy.  I had been asking around trying to find out - Boy? or Girl? so that I COULD make her a Nappy Cake that was themed to the sex of the baby.
...  when she decided that she wasn't gonna find out herself, I was prepared to switch gears and make something with neutral colors along the lines of clothing.

However.  My wonderful and often.. Megaphon-ic Daughter had already announced to the entire school that 'My Mommy is making a Nappy Cake for my teachers' baby... with REAL DIAPERS!!!'
(She just couldn't get over the words "cake" and "diaper" being in the same sentence and someone not screaming 'ewwwwwwwwwwww!')

The Deadline was Next Wednesday, when the kids are having their Valentine's Day Party.  BUT.. Hubby was injured at work on Friday and has been home for the past 3 days - so I thought I would take advantage of the 'transportation'. *grin*

The cake stood just a little over 2 feet tall and has 3 complete layers.  2 of which are made entirely of Pamper's Swaddler Diapers - 8-14lbs (so SMALL!) and was about 36 inches in diameter.
Most of the items on the cake are 'handmade' using various patterns from etsy and retail.

CreaMe's Duggie Duck pattern with french knot eyes and rattle

Gourmet Crochet's How to Make a Crochet Nappy Cake for edging on 2nd baby blanket.

Cheryl's Crochet's Lace-Up Baby Booties

and Chubby Cheek Sweaters Baby Sweater Coat is top tier of cake

The School Secretary's and Office Staff's eyeballs wow'd when I walked in the front door.  But, MOST IMPORTANTLY..
my little peanut... she was so proud!
She was actually coming up from the lunchroom while I was at the main desk and saw me with the cake.  She couldn't stop bragging.  Not only that 'her Mommy made' that, but that "she helped".

Those are the moments!

Baby It's Cold Outside...

The weekend before Christmas, we were 'blessed' (?) with a Nor'easter that dumped 2 feet of snow on us - guaranteeing a 'White Christmas'.  Then, just like with the itsy-bitsy spider, the rain came an washed a good 85% of it away - before New Years.

This past weekend, it began snowing Friday late (after midnight) and didn't end truly until Monday morning (early, early am) leaving a new white coating on the ground which would be about 7 or 8 inches (had the winds not had everything drift so much).

But one of my all-time favorite games in the winter time is to look for tracks in the snow and try to guess who's been paying visits to my yard.  Mostly a bunch of birds, squirrels, moles, field mice and rabbits, occasionally a skunk or possum, some raccoons - heck, there's even been a fox or coyote print or two to follow.

But there were prints this morning that were baffling.  They looked human - but so very tiny... at first I thought that someone was playing with Barbie dolls outside... but that would be impossible as it is very very cold.  Not quite Alaska cold, but then again, AK cold is humidity free (nearly) and NE cold is just freggin COLD!

I did what anyone who is curious of mind... I followed the tracks.  Which seemed to follow the squirrel for a while..  but then I discovered her.. such a cute little thing I had to step back for a moment and grab for my camera..

Sadly, she disappeared as quickly as she appeared - straight into my neighbor's waiting arms.  (She's yet to name her, but I will be sure to update, when this little cutie gets her name.)

I've since found out, that this beautiful little 'Eskimo' was created by Jennifer Creasey and you can pick up your very own here or at her main shop at polarbeads. This was truly a simple project, which took me only about 8 hours to complete with many, MANY interruptions from children and chores.
