Courtesy Pattern : CP68 - The Any Accessory Bag

While I love making plush toys...
my true passion is making functional crochet items.
So I love it when I can combine the fun of the toys, with the functionality of something else...

This year, it produced the Any Accessory Bag ...
A bag that can be used for almost anything... from tricks and treats, to dress up and playdates.

And best part, I am going to share it with you here!

General Notes:

- This pattern is worked in rows.  I do NOT utilize 'turning chains' when working in single crochet stitches.
- This pattern utilizes standard US Crochet Terms and was designed by a Right Handed Crocheter.
- Any changes in materials to this pattern, (hook size/yarn weight) will not produce the measurements above

CP68 - Any Accessory Bag

Body of Bag: (Make 1)
with color of choice (Flame used for BHR Pumpkin Bag/ Lavender for BHR Frank Bag),

Chain 19,
___ ROW 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea of nxt 17 chs, TURN (18 sts)
___ ROWS 2-66: sc in ea st across, TURN  (18 sts/ea row)

___ ROW 67: sc in nxt st, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 12 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in nxt st, TURN  (16 sts)
___ ROW 68: sc in ea st across, TURN  (16 sts)
___ ROW 69: sc in nxt st, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 10 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in nxt st, TURN  (14 sts)

___ ROW 70: sc in ea st across, TURN  (14 sts)
___ ROW 71: sc in nxt st, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 8 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in nxt st, TURN  (12 sts)
___ ROW/Rnd 72: Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 10 sts, Inc in nxt st, working down sides of Rows, sc in ea of nxt 70 sts, working across Row 1, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 16 sts, Inc in nxt st, working up unfinished row side, sc in ea of nxt 70 sts.
Finish off.  Secure and weave in tail to hide.

Side of Bag: (Make 2)
with color of choice (Spring Green used for BHR Pumpkin Bag/ Cafe Latte for BHR Frank Bag),

Chain 10,
___ ROW 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea of nxt 8 chs, TURN (9 sts)
___ ROWS 2-20: sc in ea st across, TURN  (9 sts/ea row)
___ ROW 21: sc in nxt st, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in nxt st, TURN  (7 sts)
___ ROW 22: sc in ea st across, TURN  (7 sts)
___ ROW 23: sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, TURN  (6 sts)
___ ROW 24: sc in ea st across  (6 sts)
Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to secure Side of Bag to Body of Bag. See "Assembly" below.

Assembly:
Visual - the Body of Bag is going to almost 'envelope' itself.

So on a good surface, lay out your Body of Bag with the wrong side face up and beginning at the widest corner (Row 1 - the outside st of the first Inc made during Row/Rnd 72), place a pin to mark what will be the top edge of front of bag that meets the side - then work working towards the opposite end of the piece, count 23 more sts and mark this st (this will be your inside lower side front corner), count 10 more sts and mark this st (this will be your inside lower back corner), count your final 23 sts and mark this st.
Place a side piece in the area where the "9 sts" are between the pins and you are ready to being sewing your bag together.

Once side one is done - repeat the process with the 2nd Side of Bag piece you made.
You can use whichever stitch you are most comfortable working with.  The model bag uses the common 'whipstitch'.

Strap: (Make 1)
with color of choice (Cafe Latte used for BHR Pumpkin Bag/ Black for BHR Frank Bag),

Chain 121,
___ ROW 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea of nxt 119 chs, TURN (120 sts)
___ ROWS 2-10: sc in ea st across, TURN  (120 sts/ea row)
___ ROW/Rnd 11: Fold in half lengthwise (so you have 6 rows of 120 sts) and working through both Row 1 and 10, sc in ea st across, rotate allowing you to work in side of Rows, sc the opening closed by working through both sides, - rotate again, this side is a little more challenging - sc in ea st along the 'fold' before rotating a final time to close up the opposite end of open rows.
Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to secure Strap to side of Bag.
Model's Straps are 16 Rnds from bottom - but you can adjust where to join based on your individual needs.

OPTIONAL Insert: (Make 1) Measure and place a piece of cardboard inside before closing completely - I did not 'attach' mine to bottom of bag - however, should you wish to, attach with same color of bag
with color of choice (Flame used for BHR Pumpkin Bag/ Lavender for BHR Frank Bag),

Chain 45,
___ ROW 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea of nxt 43 chs, TURN (44 sts)
___ ROWS 2-6: sc in ea st across, TURN  (44 sts/ea row)
___ ROW/Rnd 7: Fold in half (so you have 6 rows of 22 sts) and working through both sides, sc in ea st across, rotate this side is a little more challenging - sc in ea st along the 'fold', rotate again, working on opposite side sc the 2 halves together, before rotating a final time to close up the opposite end of open rows.
Finish off.  Secure and weave in tail to hide or leave tail to secure to inside bottom of bag.

Individual Bags:

for Pumpkin Bag:
Secure the Straps to sides of your bag and add your buttons to each side of the bag.

Add some detail striping if desired using embroidery, slipstitches or surface stitches;

before securing your completed Pumpkin from the BHR Pumpkin pattern to the Bag flap.

for Frank Bag
Frank needed a "Body" to go with his Head so a little more crocheting.

Body:
with Cafe Latte,
Chain 9

___ Rnd 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea of nxt 6 sts, 3 sc in end ch st - rotate piece to allow you to work up the other side of original beg chain (as if a flat round), sc in ea of nxt 6 chs, Inc in last ch  (18 sts)
___ Rnd 2: 3 sc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 6 sts, 3 sc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 4 sts, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 2 sts  (24 sts)
___ Rnd 3: sc in nxt st, 3 sc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 8 sts, 3 sc in nxt st, (sc in ea of nxt 4 sts, Inc in nxt st) twice, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts  (30 sts)
___ Rnd 4: sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, 3 sc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 10 sts, 3 sc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 6 sts, (Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 4 sts) twice  (36 sts)
___ Rnd 5: sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, (sc, hdc, sc) in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 12 sts, (sc, hdc, sc) in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 8 sts, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 4 sts  (42 sts)
___ Rnd 6: in BLO, slst in ea st around  (42 sts)
Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to secure Body to bottom front of Bag lining up under Frank's Head.

Finish up by securing the Straps to sides of your bag and add your buttons to each side of the bag.
Add some detail along the sides if desired by embroidering 'stitch marks' where the 2 colors meet
Model has a "Frank Head" with the loopstitches snipped instead of left as created.

This basic Bag is the perfect size for any of the Big Handle Rattles
including -

BHR - Alien
