What's Going On?

It's Saturday, Nov 5th 2022 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon... I've just posted to the FDbyK4TT Facebook Page for the first time in nearly 2 years.. but I am not sure when I will actually publish this particular blog entry...

Sooo... what the heck is up with Facebook???

This is obnoxious!!!  As someone with ADHD, OCD and a few other visually oriented quirks... this is just a visual nightmare.
I have always pretty much hated Facebook... which is a large part of the reason I had decide to delete the page
(Don't ask.. I click 'delete' 2 years ago... but recently when a designing sister.. you know her, Erin of Erin's Toy Store, needed some help with her storefronts .. I used a computer to log in and help her - and low and behold - not only is my page still there, but it's live again.... really?)
but.. this new "META Interface" is .. annoyingly obnoxious.. and I can't figure out how to just make it stop!!

So basically Facebook will only be used as an "updater"....
I will still be primarily using this blog to communicate with fellow doodlers
(since this blog keeps me more isolated) - but instead of sending out a few thousand eMails to let my fellow doodlers know something, I will just post an entry on the Facebooks (In addition to the posting of photos to Insta, Ravelry, etc.) and
linking to where the information can be found.

So that's how we're going to do that one... it allows me to avoid the toxicity and drama of the social medias (which is harmful, both mentally as well as to my creative processes) - but still allows my friends to know there's something new to tell you about  - hope that works for you as well!
If you'd prefer an eMail sent directly to your inbox - please just shoot a message to fiberdoodles@gmail.com and let me know.

A few have gotten really excited thinking I am back... No, I am not, not really.. much like John - my 'return' was a hand forced sort of deal.

I've got quite a few years worth of skin in the game - my daughter is a newbie in the field...
and I'd really like to leave her some sort of 'legacy'.. or at the very least.. a great source of relaxation & entertainment.
So originally, I began to become a little more 'active' in posting to help her as well as just make what I already had available .. more user friendly
(especially this blog)...
but I have to admit - I do have my moments.... like this one.

At this very momement, I am thinking about all the directions I would like to head in the coming year(s) - but tomorrow... tomorrow, I could be just as 'done with designing & crocheting' as I was on yesterday - no inspiration, no desire.. no love of fiber for fiber's sake.. that is the nature of 'the beast'.

Admittidly, the intial flood of "miss you" & "you're back" is very self-eteem boosting.. but then reality sets in and I remember some of the dark things about being "back" online ...

so right now, it's a "I MIGHT be back...in 2023"!

Okay, so if you're not back.. what's up with the new patterns??
Well you see, years ago, when I started to have computer
(Windows - because Windows sucks!!) issues - and after I had lost quite a few PIPs (patterns in progress) - I took to writing them in on my blog (in draft form/so they are not viewable).
Quite a few were actually "done" but I wanted to take better photographs.. or I didn't like something about the finished item; and in a few cases, were meant to be released as a "set", but only a small part of the set was complete...
it could be any one of one hundred different little Katt quirky reasons, that most people would just look a me harshly and say "really?!"
When I stopped crocheting and lost my mojo, I was just going to hand over everything to my girls.

But... one of the girls would rather 'draw design' than use a hook and the other - who started off strong with the hooking during the pandemic, has .. well, to be blunt - lost a lot of the original enthusiasm she initially had.
I
t is really hard when you are just starting out.. sales & engagement really encourage a fledgling's creativity as well as desire; but when you put out a bunch of material and get little interest (hearts, comments, etc) - one tends to want to just move on, especially when you are young and have more energy than patience - and that's where she is now.

So, all these drafts aren't doing anyone any good just taking up space on google's servers.. so I decided to publish them for doodlers to have some fun with and hopefully garnish some views of her HookNHand patterns.
So, it's really that simple.  Sorry if that disappoints anyone, but there it is.

So, there is a great big Elephant in the Room, that since I've gotten quite a few asks about... needs to be addressed.. even though I'd really just like to pretend that the elephant is just a huge fresh pile of yarn waiting for a hook.

so let's finally deal with the elephant.. with a brief, but final statement...

In 2019, for the first time in a very long time, I found myself in territory I was unfamiliar with.. I have always been an extremely independant woman, who for 35 yrs (I left home when I was 16) never came to rely on anyone to do anything for me - I couldn't..

Allowing anyone (let alone a few thousand people), to see me vulnerable - not just bitching about something - but actually vulnerable, is something I had rarely (if ever) allowed before.

Since moving in 2016, my life has changed drastically and irreversably
and while some of those changes were positive - a greater majority of them were not - the loss of my beloved Beastie (which I really still have not gotten over) and most importantly, the loss of my personsal security - because I gave someone else the power to provide it.

So at this point in my life, when I should be focused on retirement and enjoying the fruits of a hard (worked) life ..  it's instead time to start all over again, almost completely from scratch -
Basically, life was like, "Oh you had plans?  How adorable".....

And that is all I truely wish to say on the matter.  Dwelling on the past changes nothing - can't change what happened.. so it's just a huge waste of time to live or even visit there once you've moved past.

So if you want to hang around, we'll just have to wait it out together to see what the next few months bring... if not.. well, the blog is here when your fingers get itchy for some doodles!

Acryligate... Acrylipocalypse... Acrylistinction...

Okay, perhaps a bit dramatic... but, it truly feels that way if you don't have a yarn stash that rivals the product isles of a specialty store like Joann's, Hobby Lobby or Michaels..

Have you been out looking for yarn lately?? Not the expensive stuff that only knitters buy...
(inside joke.. knitters, please do NOT take offense and start eMailing me...) ...
I mean the acrylic, "scratchy stuff" that we Amigurumists love to use!!

RED HEART YARNS!!

It's getting harder and harder to find even the most basic colors like Aran, Light Blue & Baby Pink... nevermind the ami specific colors like Warm Brown, Spring Green & Coffee..

Although I have not personally purchased yarn in almost 3 years ... I was made aware of this shortage, when I was contacted by a client asking for HELP on color substitutions and because of rumors that colors were being discontinued...

So, I did what I always do..
(first I contacted a slew of sister designers.. then... ) I went to the source for answers!

I wrote to Yarnspirations to address the shortage issues as well as request an answer to the rumors that Warm Brown, a staple in the Amigurumi Community, had been "discontinued"... (Spoiler Alert.. it has and it hasn't.)

As I had suspected, COVID-19 is largely responsible for the yarn shortages of Red Heart.. or at least, COVID is getting the blame..

I had figured that with lockdowns and such, mills haven't been exactly 'milling'... and with so many people being home and picking up hooks while binge watching whatever on Netflix or Hulu.... supplies were bound to run short or even out..

But as I was searching for Warm Brown the other night, I nearly had a heart attack at what a single skein of Red Heart .. the Blue Collar Worker's yarn... is selling for!
Amazon is selling "Warm Brown Classic" ..
(which is a 3&change oz skein) for almost 8 dollars...
8 DOLLARS!!
(I am not going to put in my 2 cents as to 'why' Warm Brown is no longer a 'super saver' skein.. at 7oz.... but... yeah... 16 dollars for what you used to get for around 4 or 5??  ... you can figure that out for yourself...)

and Walmart wasn't any better.. they DO have a few skeins remaining of Warm Brown Super Saver.. if you are willing to pay between 11 & 20 dollars for each one!!

As for Joann's, Michaels, Yarnspirations, etc - they have absolutely NONE in stock!

Supply & Demand Baby....
Price gouging ?? ...
Or perhaps something in between..

So, I think I'll be looking for a new yarn to call my own
(eventually. I have been getting the hooking itch lately) .. and make a new Yarn Palette Ring...

I do love the muted colors of Big Twist yarns... so maybe I'll go with that.  I haven't used them for my work because they were more expensive than Red Heart..  and let's keep it real.. most people love Red Heart because it is so inexpensive!
I am not a fan of ILTY for Amis (its too soft), but there are other medium weight yarns out there...
I mean, if you're gonna have to pay $5 to $7 bucks
(or more) a skein for acrylic... might as well work with whatever is pretty and available eh??

For those of you who are strict followers of pattern instructions... color substitutions will not affect the overall completed project.  Sure it's going to change the aesthetics .. but who's to say that my color palette is the 'correct one'?  Rainbow Zebras and Pink Elephants are actually very adorable!
So yes, you can absolutely substitute Red Heart Warm Brown with another Red Heart yarn.. such as Aran Fleck or Cafe Latte... or completely go with another brand or even weight..
(weigh WILL affect the size of your project) - color changes have always been a discretionary aspect of the design anyway.

Comments for this post have been left open - so please tell me your thoughts...
what has been your experience in trying to find your own favorite colors.. or even brands.  I know of Red Heart, because it's what I use... are other brands also lacking in stock?

P.S. - I did offer to start a 'petition' for Yarnspirations... you know, to allow a visual demand/need/desire; for their 'sales & marketing dept' to return Warm Brown back into the Super Saver package...
but...
a "yeah.. no thanks" was pretty much the answer..
which only firmed up, in my mind, the REAL reason it went from being a 7oz skein to a 3oz one...
I was born on a day.. just not 'yester-day'..

Black Market Crochet Patterns

When I sat down to write this post, I had something completely different in mind... and in keeping with my 2021 "Positive Posts Only" resolution, I had reservations about writing about it at all..

But given that it may help other designers out there, I went ahead with my overall plan... without my original idea.

I had made graphics to use, that would give readers a visual reference, so they could see for themselves - it wasn't just 'knock offs' - but the actual work of different crochet artists, whose only mistake was to be too generous with their talents -
but as I began to lookup links to give proper credit, I found I didn't want to embarrass anyone, so I quickly tossed out the graphics and tried to figure out another way to go about sharing this information.

Over the weekend, I got a phone call from a very dear friend, who had been informed that one of her patterns was being sold in an etsy storefront - someone she didn't know and obviously, had never given permission to sell her pattern.
When I looked at the storefront - to help gauge if it was a knock off attempt or her actual work as well as to see what could be done - I recognized several designer's patterns being sold... MANY of which were FREE online, from their original authors.

Many people get frustrated, angry and confused on what to do.  Their immediate reaction is, and rightfully so, to lash out at the person posting their stolen work - essentially a throat punch through written word.
Which, either elicits no reply at all or the "I didn't know" reply... and the work is removed.
In those cases - situation handled and you move on... but what of the 'seller' or sharer who ignores you or goes a step further and "blocks" you?

You can handle most copyright issues on your own by contacting the venue where your work is being illegally displayed or sold
and remember -  even YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS are your own intellectual property - NO ONE has the right to display them without permission.

MOST venues will have a form they request you fill out -

BUT here is what the Legal Team of any site will need to know when you are claiming infringement; so if writing blindly to a website - make sure you include all the following information:

Your Name: your legal name
Your Organization: your business name/store name
Your Job Title (if applicable) : Designer/Artist or Owner
Mailing Address: your physical mailing address
Phone Number: your telephone number
Email: your business related eMail address
Where the rights are based: USA, UK... elsewhere
Who owns the copyright: your name
When it was copyright: Registration Number & Date/or when it was first published in written/print form (Ie: when you published it to your blog, store, etc)
What type of content are you reporting: Photo(s), Written Materials(s), etc
Links (URLs) leading directly to specific content you are reporting:
Link 1:
Link 2:

This (pick one: "written material"/"photo") is the intellectual property of (your business name here), including, but not limited to the character(s) (the name of your product - Ie: "Gideon the Gargoyle")

Because of these rights, no one is authorized to manufacture, copy, advertise, offer for sale/sell or distribute freely any products utilizing the (your business name here) name. I am writing to you in good faith belief, that the material contained within this complaint is not being used with the copyright holder's permission, it's agent or the law.

Remember, If or When you contact a host venue - they are most likely unaware that your material is being infringed upon - they are not ignorant to the fact it happens, but they cannot possibly know everything that their users are doing on their website.  So be professional!

The best way to help prevent the sale of your hard work is the WATERMARK!

People have always questioned me as to why I ruin great photos with a watermark through a foot, or arm.. or ear - wherever it overlaps part of the subject of the photo...

The answer is simple - because it can't be 'cropped out' without ruining the photo...
Watermarks also help YOU with host venues - an image on the "Stiches from Witches" storefront, with a "FDbyK4TT" watermark and a copyright claim coming from FDbyK4TT, is sort of a no-brainer
(not to mention an easily proven infringement) for the IP Clerks of any host site.

It doesn't matter if it's a free pattern or a picture of your finished work from someone else's pattern - WATERMARK IT
(your photo could be used to sell someone else's pattern, if the designer has been dutiful in watermarking their work!!) .

You don't need an expensive art program,
(the one I use was originally a 'freeware' program, while it was in beta testing) - if you are a Windows User - you can use a Windows Accessory Tool "Paint"...  I do not use Microsoft Paint - so I do not know all of it's pros/cons, but it's basic enough to add a simple "Text" watermark on top of your photo, to help you avoid having your work used illegally.

There are MANY image programs out there for free as well as to purchase.  Find the one that suits your needs best and protect your photos on the Internet from people who will do naughty things with them!

About the title of this Entry... it was a comical funny .. literally, I laughed out loud for a good 5 minutes when my friend first referred to her theft issue as "Black Marketed Patterns" and then went into a fit of giggle again later during the conversation - although what happened was not a laughing issue.... I had never considered that particular term when thinking about the issue that designers face with the 'copycats'... In searching for graphics to use in this entry, I learned that someone actually has a storefront by the same name!!
Kudos to her! It's quirky and definitely a name that will stick with you.

Wow! Who Knew?!

I can honestly say, that organizing this blog has been not only a chore ... it has been frustrating 'lesson' of what NOT to do ...
and we'll just leave that statement as that ....

There are still a ton of "drafts" - most of which will not be published anytime soon... (once I had several unpublished patterns lost due to "forced updates" creating the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH - I began using this blog to work and there are probably close to 200 drafts still to go through, many of which are patterns that you've never seen..
and many of those are "freebies")

but they do get in the way as I am searching for those that do need to be posted.. oy!!

As many patterns released never got an official plug here on the blog -
(only an intro on FB or Instagram) in addition to losing hundreds of photos due to computers dying a painful, overworked death (I have photos on a flash drive - but unfortunately.. I can't find the drive!!)  .. it's been a challenge to make sure I get everyone up... and wow, I had no idea I had so many patterns...

It's one thing to see a number .. it's another thing to have to manually add them in .. one at a time - lol!!
But we'll get there in the end.

Now.. I've made some changes that should be more helpful to you...
a "Search Option" has been added to the side menu - so you can search for patterns via tags
(clickable tag links in side menu) or by putting keywords directly into the search box (the search box is overly sensitive - I tried a test search of cat.. and any mention of "cat" - even the word category - came up my results)

There have been 'Pages' added to the top menu..
Amigurumi (not viewed/published at the time of this writing) will hold the bulk of Simple Amigurumi Patterns
"Series Patterns" will hold all the series that you love - Pudgy Series, Handful Series, etc

Please let me know if you find any pages that go astray...
And please, let me know if there is anything else that you think may help improve your surfing needs.
This page is set up for computer/web browsing - NOT mobile phones - so please remember that you may have image distortion on the 3rd photo in any row if you are viewing from your phone!

I am taking a break from working on the blog pages - to finish up on the FREE pattern that will be coming out this Friday.. so, If you've read this far... don't forget to check out Friday's post!!

Here's a WIP photo... can you tell who's is who's?
3 amiguruimis.. by 3 different hands..
I have numbered them to help - can guess which one is MINE?

2021 - A New Year

Welcome to a new year and hopefully a better year..
First, let's address the elephant in the room...

WHY am I no longer on social media?
The answer is truly a very simple one - social media can be incredibly toxic!!
My most productive time as a designer was before becoming distracted with everyone else's "drama"... and no, my nature can't just "tune it out"... When it comes to myself (and that is the only one I can speak for) - my desire to 'help' people; curiosity not only killed the cat - it kills the creativity too.

SOOOO.. how are you supposed to see what's new?
Easy - signing up for the eMail so you get a notice when something new is blogged about (patterns, hacks/tips, freebies.. etc) well, at least it's easier than HOPING your Newsfeed will show you an update....

As I try to regain some sort of inspiration and creativity - social media is definitely not my friend.

Better stuff
- The look of this blog - I have been working to update everything, remove old tags, update new tags, make this page more aesthetically pleasing to viewers.. etc
But, for those who've followed me since I started and worry I will make some not so good changes...

1. NO, I will not take on google/blogger ads as a way to generate revenue... so you should still see no advertisements that benefit me on this blog (I cannot speak to what you might see using different Internet Browsers or what Google may add unbeknownst to me.  Even when I do link offsite, I am NOT doing so for any revenue - so you can trust in a recommendation, that it IS truly a recommendation from me to you.)

2. YES, comments will, for now, need to be "approved" before they appear publicly (This is not due to anything negative from readers - this is because of SPAM... when I started cleaning up this blog - there were about 60 comments awaiting approval.. nearly all of them were advertising (spamming) for tree removal services??, 'come check out my website' things - and "hey I love your content, you can get more traffic if you.... advertisements".)

3. There will be a major "publishing content" weekend.  My plan is that it will happen this coming weekend (8 Jan through 10 Jan 2021). It has taken me a little longer than I had anticipated to complete all the "Product Pages" - apologies!
But overall, there are no plans to post more than 2 or 3 times (days) in any given week and that will usually only take place when there is either a Courtesy Pattern, a CAL or a New Pattern's Release.

Best Stuff...
My daughter's debut pattern "Honey the Bear" will be released on Tuesday 5 January 2021!

the Bestest Stuff...
A new Courtesy Pattern from FiberDoodles by K4TT will be posted on 15 January 2021!
(I have 2 patterns I am deciding between at the time of this writing.. if it is the "Cat" one - it will be a single post - if it is the Valentine's Day themed pattern, it will be a C-A-L with all parts placed up over the weekend of the 15th of January.)

So see you soon!

Well the Cat's Among the Pixies Now

The cat's among the pixies is one of those Harry Potter things that has just stuck with me over the years...
It's a magical play on the old idiom "put the cat among the pigeons" - which is a little more aggressive than simply letting the "cat out of the bag"...

So, let's go...

Firstly, I hope you are all doing well.. well, as "well as can be expected" with the Covid Lockdowns and frustrations...
I had not planned on making an actual "hey.. remember me?" sort of post until January -  but sadly, Google saw fit to ask that question for me.

I'll detail that in just a moment...

2020 has been a cruel year for the Doodle Family...
In March, along with all the other family stuff that had been going on...
I lost my beloved Beastie -

Being a "Cat Person", I truly hadn't realized how much losing him would affect me ... it took me WEEKS, just to move past the tears (sobbing.. not just a tissue dabbing tear of loss - but incoherent sobs of true grief) - and months to move beyond the numbness and then pain into finally a sort of 'acceptance'...  although sometimes, even that is still in question...

What hasn't been in question, is that my final source of inspiration is now gone...

I hadn't even really thought about Covid, the quarantines/lockdowns or anything.. including crocheting until about June.. which was when my youngest was slated to graduate her final year of school.. and which had to be put on hold until August... (but at least she was able to bid a final farewell to her school and teachers.. originally, the entire ceremony was going to be scrapped all together!  Many seniors weren't so fortunate...)

"The People" (as I have often referred to my children), have taken up the mantle of crocheting and designing!  My eldest, who is an accomplished artist has been working on the sketching of characters which she, one day, hopes to bring to life in fiber.. and my youngest (seen above in her Graduation Gown and below crocheting in the sunshine of summer) has been working on redesigning the retired KISS Series, to fit her own style and personality.

And an associate who tested for me (FDbyK4TT) has already checked several of these patterns, so they will begin being rolled out in January 2021.

Sadly, I haven't truly touched a crochet hook or yarn since March..

NOW.. WHAT THE HECK DID GOOGLE DO???

Some may have been surprised to find an eMail this morning from "Fiber Doodles" (which has a "." as the sender due to my use of a graphic for my page's title)

On yesterday, I began to aggressively update & re-maintain this blog.
Since FDbyK4TT no longer has a presence on Facebook (or any social media), and Etsy and Ravelry have both been thoroughly pissing off so many of my Doodlers (I've had a problem since Rav became Photo Nazis some year's back and Etsy... forcing it's own checkout on everyone, which I was not eager to do with Etsy's past record of 'missteps' with people's personal information)...
But, I had began the process of insuring that Doodlers still had access to my patterns, especially the Courtesy Doodles that serve as introductions for new, potential Doodlers.

Relinking some Courtesy Patterns, which were once on Facebook exclusively (no more dead links), and looking into eCommerce Carts to sell my Premium Patterns here on this blog; as well as reclaiming images on posts (which had been broken due to their name & Google's archival of it's old photo hosting website) ... and of course, creating/updating a page to showcase them for your ease...
you can see yesterday's efforts on the "Courtesy Patterns" Page  (which still needs a little more tweaking, but I think you will enjoy it) ...

You know, making this blog more 'Doodler Friendly'...

During this process, several posts which were updated or "published" from their 'draft' form - went out in the eMail you see imaged above; to those who had already subscribed to this blog..

I do hope it did not cause any alarms - and well, at least it told you.. Yup... I am still alive :)

But I cannot explain why these particular patterns were highlighted and eMailed to you.. they are not 'new' entries - their dates range from this year to last.. and most importantly, had no significant changes made to them... (most were merely adding a photo, correcting a photo address... adding the copyright blurb, fixing a misspelling overlooked.. something minor or insignificant...)

Never the less, I apologize for any inconvenience... and since I do not know what caused this... I can't guarantee that it will not happen again before something of value is truly posted.

And while it may feel a little like SPAM or Junk Mail at the moment... it did create an opportunity to let you see for yourself...

- Following the FiberDoodles by K4TT Blog is as easy as just typing your eMail address into the space provided below..
and
- It won't truly SPAM you.. even if I make 50 posts a day.. you will get a single eMail alerting you to multiple posts..

So, feel free to sign up and be sure to add "noreply+feedproxy@google.com" to your 'safe list' so you won't miss a thing.
Google's eMail Proxy mails out this blog's updates around 10pm EST - perhaps another will come tonight?

Either way, I will begin posting regularly again in January 2021 (until then, it's safe to just ignore any eMails that may come as I fix all the bugs on this platform).. and at least with the eMail alerts, you are guaranteed not to miss seeing a post - as so many did, when I was relying on a Newsfeed that constantly wanted me to pay to 'boost' it.
