A Fall Favorite

Nothing says Fall like Candy Corn..
The minute you see them in the store, your mind is triggered to think of Halloween and Thanksgiving - cool Autumn nights and the crunch of red and orange leaves under your feet..
it's one of the most comforting sounds in the world to me!

And although I have never had a fondness for this particular sugary treat, at this time of the year, you can always find a candy dish full of them.  Decoration?  My guests don't think so.. they love them!

and I am hoping that you love this sweet little cutie just as much!

Whoa.. wait.. Did I say 'little'?
He's actually a FOOT and a HALF tall.. that's not so little in the plushie world.  But he is very fast to work up and melt in your arms squishy!!

In classic Candy Corn colors, or you can use your own fall color scheme to create this iconic symbol of the Fall Season.  As a decoration for Halloween or as a Friend to pal around with watching Halloween Themed Cartoons - CD is bound to make quite an impression.

The CD Corn Plushie contains 9 pages of written instruction, coupled with detail oriented photographs and helpful tutorials to help you create and enjoy this unique playmate.
To complete this pattern, it is expected that you already know crochet basics such as how to chain, crochet using slip stitches as well as single crochet stitches and how to change yarn colors. You should also know how to crochet in the round, crochet in rows, crochet using a “chain start”, crochet an opening closed, how to increase and decrease crochet stitches as well as how to make use of Back and/or Front Loops Only.

Etsy? Whats Up?

I've gotten a few questions in recent weeks about the FiberDoodles by K4TT on Etsy.com

Well without dragging all my unsuspecting clients into the drama - I mean, you want to crochet.. not gossip right?!

Many sellers have long since grown tired of etsy's policies with regard to 'non-homemade' sellers - it's not eBay after all!  But you can purchase things such as "Dial Deodorant" on Etsy.com (which can also be purchased in you local WalMart or 7-11 Convenience Store) - there's nothing remotely homemade about a stick of deodorant which has been purchased in bulk and being resold.  While others, who perhaps work together as a "team" (Mother, Daughter, Siblings, etc) have had it demanded of them, to present photos of their "studios" and perhaps trademark secrets - to establish their products as "homemade"... only to be shut down anyway because "Etsy feels as if they could not possibly produce as many items as they have, without benefit of machine."  Wait... WHAT?!?!

Recently Etsy.com gave it's vendors the ULTIMATE slap in the face... and for many it's the last straw...
I received the following eMail yesterday - 11 Sept 2013 (eMail in part)

"Overwhelming Influx".. Umm.. I am NOT surprised!!

and then, a week later - 18 Sept 2013:

Etsy charges quite a bit more for sellers to be allowed to market their products on their servers, and well, they recently did do ALOT of advertising on television and print and opened the market to people who didn't know of it's existence.. but then, Etsy.com got greedy...
Sellers, while the backbone of places like Etsy.com, have long since become an 'after thought' - our concerns are either pacified with patronizing answers or simply ignored all together... in an attempt to gain IPO status (that means play on the stock exchange .. like Facebook)

Etsy became more concerned with getting the buyers in the door and developing a portfolio which the public would want to invest in - and of course, getting their cut of a profit along the way - which is great business & what you'd expect..
but you better hope you have some vendors there waiting with things people want...

While FiberDoodles by K4TT will maintain it's storefront on Etsy.com - the inventory of patterns is being reduced and will be phased out all together - either by sale or expiration.  I have not relisted any product since August 31 2013 and until Etsy comes to it's senses, will not list anything but finished, completed items on their servers - which should begin in January 2014 if at all.  Etsy's decision to go full board with allowing 're-sales' (items such as deodorant and bulk store goods); really doesn't help the handmade artisan sell their wares.  After all, something that can be produced on a machine by the thousands and sold at pennies above cost, really doesn't make a homemade item seem 'worth it'.

While I understand that many have become used to Etsy.com and have grown comfortable with using it's storefront and the decision to 'move' creates an inconvenience; I promise you that there are quite a few venues which are just as easy to navigate.  We are hoping that this inconvenience is only a temporary issue - and many, MANY artisans are in the same position FDbyK4TT finds itself in.

Introducing: Swoops the Seagull

When I was a young girl, I remember one of the most fun things to do at the beach in Ocean City, Maryland was to go get a cup of Thrasher's French Fries (on the boardwalk) and munch away as you strolled down to the beach.  Going to 'the beach' was a vacation in itself - I lived a good 2.5 hrs from the ocean... and it was always a treat to go.

but one of the best memories of the beach, being that I had already seen JAWS about 200 times and was terrified of the ocean, was taking my cup of fries down to the beach and watching the drifting seagulls, that would float effortlessly just feet above me -  gulls that loved those salty-vinegar touched treats just as much as I did.

As a young child, this was so exciting.  It wasn't until I moved, many years later, that I discovered just how special those O.C. Gulls were (or how big!).
In Ocean City, Maryland.. if you tossed a Thrasher's Fry into the air.. it would NEVER hit the ground.  There was always a gull waiting to grab that delectable morsel in mid air, sometimes just barely missing the ground for his efforts to ensure the prize.

Here in MA, not so much.  Living close to the beach, there is much more opportunity to interact with gulls... but here, they scavenge for food.. and wait for food it to hit the ground and for you to back away, before shyly retrieving their snack...  a real bunch of scaredy birds.  The gulls of Ocean City Marylad will forever hold a special summer fondness for me and it is those gulls which Swoops received his name.
Swoops the Seagull, contains 10 pages of pattern instructions, with detail oriented photographs to help you bring this 15 inch  tall friend to life.
To complete this pattern, it is expected that you already know crochet basics such as how to chain, crochet using slip stitches as well as single crochet stitches and how to change yarn colors. Heifer! Heifer! Heifer!!

Believe it or not, there are quite a few Pillow Pals that I didn't think there would ever be interest in.  Previously, I had introduced the Pillow Pal Pig and many squealed with delight...

so it's only appropriate to release yet another 'farm favorite', who has been sitting quietly chewing it's cud in my "patterns" folder... or perhaps, just because "heifer" is such a fun word to say!...

Some may find me a bit odd, but one of the smells I remember fondly from childhood was the pastures where the cows grazed and watched the world go by.  Well, maybe not the cow patties in the pasture, but the smells associated with the whole farm setting and watching these beautiful creatures wander around in it. They also have the cutest (big) mouths, which from my recollection, seemed to be stained more often than not -  green.

The Pillow Pal Cow, contains 9 pages of pattern instructions, with detail oriented photographs to help you bring this 16 inch friend to life.

I Can't Eat That!!

Although I know a few kids, when I was younger, that would have had no problem diving right in and munching away on crayons ... or paste...  or pencils...
hee hee..

The school was very much surprised this morning when this arrived at their front desk.  Although the school and I have had our differences over education plans; overall, I admire the principle and the front office staff... and wanted to do something special for the first day back...
and besides,  I LOVE SCHOOL SUPPLIES!!!..
everything all new and clean and unused...

So this past weekend, while picking up the last minute needs and forgotten tidbits for my youngest's last year at her current school, we decided to make a cake...  as a sort of 'thank you' and farewell...

I am sure the school can put to good use all of the items contained within..
which includes:

6 Boxes of Puffs Facial Tissues (1st tier base)
10 Boxes of 24ct Crayola Crayons  (1st tier)
20 Blue Ball Point Bic Pens (1st tier)
8 Red Ball Point Bic Pens (1st tier)
2 Pks 4X6 Lined Index Cards (1st tier)
50  Eraser Caps (1st tier)
10 Bottles of Elmers Glue  (1st & 2nd tiers)
1 Styrofoam Diorama (2nd tier base)
22 Elmers Glue Sticks (2nd tier)
1 Box of White Chalk (2nd tier)
10 Solar Calculators (2nd & 3rd tiers)
3 Pack of Clorox Disinfecting Wipes (3rd tier base)
6 Spiral Notepads (3rd tier)
4 Pairs Safety Scissors (3rd tier)
5 Boxes of Crayola Thin Markers (3rd tier)
5 Boxes of Crayola Fat Markers (3rd tier)
5 Boxes of Crayola Colored Pencils (3rd tier)
5 Boxes of Rose Art Colored Pencils (3rd tier)
6 12 inch rulers (3rd tier)
10 No2 Pencils  (3rd tier)
2 Purell Gel Hand Sanitizer Pumps (4th tier base)
12 Individual Kleenex Pocket Packs (1st & 4th tier)

There might be more (I forget and I didn't take photos from all angles), but you get the idea..
Back 2 School Supplies Cakes are just like the "Diaper Cakes" only with.. *drum roll please*... back to school items...
Schools love them!  Teachers love them!
The above is what was included in this particular B2S Cake to give you ideas for your own (where to start at least) - but you could be classroom specific (Science, Reading, Math, etc) , themed event (Holiday, School Party or Dance theme, etc)  or just general as was done here..
things like paper towels, which was not included in this cake, facial tissues, wipes and hand sanitizers are always needed at schools for both classroom and general needs.

**Important to remember... the weight factor!!  This 'cake' weighed between 25 and 30lbs once completed.. you will want to select a platform that is able to sufficiently support your cake.  Start wide and work narrow - lifting the entire platform occasionally to ensure stability and transportability.

Apologies for the grainy photos, I took them last night without benefit of flash.. and didn't think to check the images before delivering the cake!!
It was the first time using this particular setting on my camera..

Labor Day & Back 2 School

Wow!  Really?  The Summer is over already?   But I got nothing done!!

Well, okay, so that is not entirely true.  It's been very busy for me here on the home front. One child going off to Middle School and the youngest entering into the 6th Grade!
But truth be told, I am not a "Summer Person".. I have learned the older I get, the more I dislike the 3 H's of Summer (Hazy, Hot & Humid)  -  it's all fine and dandy if your a kid and enjoy playing in the pool all day..
but I am an artist - either by paper (which gets all wet n nasty in the humidity) or by fiber (which sticks to your sweaty fingers)...
so I am looking forward to Fall and of course, Winter!

There have been a FEW patterns released over the Summer Months.. I will post individual sales pages this week for the ones that I missed..
but just in case you missed them  (and can't wait for me to post them here) :

There was the KISS Series Unicorn:

Special Pig

The Pillow Pal Piggy has been sitting in a folder on my computer, just waiting for someone to think he was a Special Pig...

Pigs have long been associated with being messy.. over indulgent and ... well, not always the best when it comes to pets - despite such famous pigs as Wilbur from Charlotte's Web fame.
Although, from personal experience, I can tell you all of the stereotypes about pigs are FALSE.... these creatures are highly intelligent, very fastidious and genuinely affectionate to their human pets.

So it was one of those patterns which I figured would be in my private collection and used when family or friends requested a piggy to cuddle with.  Imagine my surprise when I had clients and blog readers ask if I was going to make a Pillow Pal Pig!  I am proud to introduce you to the Pillow Pal Piggy - ready to squeal his way into your heart.

The 7th in the  Pillow Pal line,
contains 8 pages of pattern instructions, with detail oriented photographs to help you bring this 16 inch friend to life.
