Courtesy Pattern : CP09 - Heal The World - With Sunshine

"Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race.
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

And the dream we would conceived in
Will reveal a joyful face
And the world we once believed in
Will shine again in grace
Then why do we keep strangling life
Wound this earth, crucify it's soul
Though it's plain to see, this world is heavenly
Be God's glow.

We could fly so high
Let our spirits never die
In my heart I feel
You are all my brothers
Create a world with no fear
Together we'll cry happy tears
See the nations turn
Their swords into plowshares
We could really get there
If you cared enough for the living
Make a little space to make a better place."

I understand not everyone enjoys, or even likes Michael Jackson or his music, but I ask of you today - this day of the 'celebration' of life, to give the gift of L.O.V.E to another.

Please donate today.  Whether donating financially to help a starving child, or to protect endangered wildlife. Donating your time to a local shelter for abused animals or simply picking up the litter that lines the streets -
WE can change this world and make it a better place...
all we have to do is look with our hearts instead of our eyes.

Materials Used:
Red Heart WW Yarns in colors: 0320 Cornmeal, (petals) 0624 TeaLeaf (stem),  0365 Coffee (flower center)
Crochet Hook, size  US E4/3.50 MM
2 foot Roasting Stick (or  2 foot, #2 pencil diameter,  wooden dowel)
4-6 Wooden Bamboo Skewers
6-8 Wooden Popsicle Sticks
Polyester Filler
Sewing Needle
Knitting Needle (or long needle to create opening to insert skewer)
Long Straight Pins for positioning/sewing

Finished flower measures nearly 3 feet in height and almost 12 inches in width.  This, of course, will vary depending on your crocheting gauge and/or tension.  All stitches are worked in a continuous spiral though both loops of previous stitch, using single crochet, unless otherwise noted.
This project is completed in several smaller sections, joined together in a manner which creates one complete project.
Pattern is written in a manner which also displays the easiest way to assemble; creating the bud base of the flower first, then the petals and finally the stem.  Although, you are free to create your pieces in any order that fits your needs.

Bud Base – Face Section (Make 1):
with Coffee,
Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 7 sc in st.
___ Rnd 2:  [Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (14 sts)
___ Rnd 3:  in BLO, [sc in nxt st, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (21 sts)
___ Rnd 4:  in BLO, [sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (28 sts)
___ Rnd5:   in BLO, [sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (35 sts)
___ Rnd 6:  in BLO, [sc in ea of nxt 4 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (42 sts)
___ Rnd 7:  [sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (49 sts)
___ Rnd 8:  sc in ea st around  (49 sts)
Finish off and weave in tail.

Bud Base- Back Section (Make 1):

with TeaLeaf,
Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 7 sc in st.
___ Rnd 2:  [Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (14 sts)
___ Rnd 3:  [sc in nxt st, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (21 sts)
___ Rnd 4:  [sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (28 sts)
___ Rnd5:   [sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (35 sts)
___ Rnd 6:  [sc in ea of nxt 4 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (42 sts)
___ Rnd 7:  [sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (49 sts)
___ Rnd 8:  sc in ea st around  (49 sts)
___ Rnd 9:  [sc in ea of nxt 7 sts, chain 7, slst in 2nd chain from hook and in nxt ch,  sc in nxt st, hdc in nxt st, dc in ea of nxt 2 sts, slst in same st as chain] 7 times
Finish off, leaving enough yarn remaining to sew front and back pieces together – stuff with filling before closing up completely.  Do not stuff too firmly as you will need to insert bamboo skewers through the filler from 1 side to the other to help ensure that pedals remain erect.  Do not stuff too lightly as you will want a ‘puffed’ look to the center of the bud.

Petals (Make 28)
with Cornmeal,
Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 7 sc in st.
___ Rnd 2:  sc in ea st around  (7 sts)
___ Rnd 3:  Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts  ( 9 sts)
___ Rnds 4-5:  sc in ea st around  (9 sts/ea rnd)
___ Rnd 6:  Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 4 sts  (11 sts)
___ Rnds 7-9:  sc in ea st around  (11 sts/ea rnd)
___ Rnd 10:  (Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 2 sts) twice, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 4 sts  (14 sts)
___ Rnds  11-17:  sc in ea st around  (14 sts/ea rnd)
___ Rnd 18:  sc in ea of nxt 10 sts, (Dec nxt 2 sts tog) twice  (12 sts)
___ Rnd 19:  sc in ea st around  (12 sts)
___ Rnd 20:  sc in ea of nxt 9 sts,  Dec nxt 3 sts tog  (10 sts)
___ Rnd  21: sc in ea st around  (10 sts)
___ Rnd  22:  Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 6 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog  (8 sts)
___ Rnd 23:  sc in ea st around  (8 sts)
___ Rnd 24:  Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 6 sts  (7 sts)
Finish off, leaving enough yarn remaining to sew petal to bud base.

Once you have all petals completed, insert popsicle sticks into the center of several petals (# of petals stuffed with popsicle sticks determined by # of skewers used/ 2 petals per skewer).  Using pins, secure petals in a circular pattern to bud base, in 2 rows/ 14 petals per row.
Once you have even spacing and are happy with the aesthetics of petal placement – remove top row, exposing only the back row.  Using a knitting needle, push needle through one side of bud and out the other (creating a tunnel through the filler); follow needle with bamboo skewer. (you will have part of wooden skewer exposed on both sides of bud base)  Do this at least one more time creating a -|- or X type pattern to assist in keeping petals erect.    Model uses 4 skewers to help support the large petals.  Insert skewer into petals stuffed with popsicle sticks - then secure petals to bud base.

Stem (Make 1)

with TeaLeaf,
Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 7 sc in st.
___ Rnd 2:  in BLO, sc in ea st around  (7 sts)
___ Rnds 3-103: sc in ea st around  (7 sts/ea rnd)

___ ROW 1:  sc in ea of nxt 4 sts, ch-1, turn  (4 sts)
___ Row 2:  sc in ea st across, ch-1, turn  (4 sts)
___ Row 3:  [Dec nxt 2 sts tog] twice  ( 2 sts)
Finish off, leaving enough yarn remaining to sew the stem to the back of the bud base.

Enjoy the Pattern :o)

Remembering you Michael - you are sorely missed

Upcoming Etsy & 3Ft Sunflower Announcement

Okay Dokey - A BUNCH of information to give to everyone, and I want to do it in a single post.

For me, tomorrow is a very special birthday..

I had intended to make 12 3ft sunflowers to honor the birth of Michael Jackson, to be sent to the Forest Lawn Mausoleum and placed in/around his tomb for tomorrow. HOWEVER, I am not in California (opposite coast) and repeated inquires to the staff at Forest Lawn have proven unyielding. (Basically, because of fans and vandalism, etc - there was/is no guarantee that the fiber flowers would make it to their destination unless they were hand delivered by a 'family member' or someone who had authorization into the Mausoleum area.) Well that SUCKS! I have a friend/tester who lives in CA - but lives at the other end of the state and an 8 hour trip to deliver fiber flowers is just a tad *much* to even ask of her.
So... my flower project - failed :o(

But my failure will be your gain - I will post the 3Ft Sunflower Pattern here on my blog for my readers. So be sure to check the blog tomorrow for the pattern... and Happy Birthday Michael - you are missed!

Etsy -

It has been sometime since you've seen a new pattern in my etsy shop ... well all that is about to change, with 2 NEW series of patterns.

Several weeks ago, I was 'commissioned'(?) to make a giraffe baby rattle; that needed to look more like a stuffed animal she had gotten for her older daughter at the zoo. (Think Precious Moments meets Beanie Babies - well that is the description I was given.. lol)

and this was the sketch I worked up as we were talking . . .

(Not my best work, but we were outside, watching the children - wind blowing and I only had a pencil, notebook paper, bad lighting and a child going "Momma can I...? Momma can I ????" every 2 minutes.. )

There were several criteria markers that needed to be met.  1- the animal had to be machine washable  2- no small (choke-able) parts   3- all parts had to be soft  and large for small baby hands
...etc..
all the basics to a 'baby toy'..
and of course, it had to have a mass large enough to insert a rattle -

not really my area of expertise.. I am more of a 'sculptured gal'

This is what I came up with -

The giraffe was first done, but the pattern I created was simple and quick to work up, that I quickly added him a friend - zebra (which was another animal at the zoo that seemed to captivate the baby's attention, along with the lions...) which got me to thinking what other animals would babies enjoy...

and thus, became the K.I.S.S. Series.  "Keeping It Simple & Straightforward"  - nothing fancy, nothing complex - just adorable critters.  So far, it's only the zebra and giraffe which have been completed - well, zebra still needs a few things sewn on.. hee hee ... - but I've got ideas in the works for several more animals in the series and I am sure after a trip to the local yarn store today - I will think of a few more animals to add to the collection.  :o)

There is another series that I have been working on during the end months of July and early months of August, which are now in testing phase -
Although, the poor things don't have a catchy little 'series' name..
This is 1 of 10 dolls which consist of everything from a Back to School child (pictured below) to several animals to include fox and monster.

As you can tell, I've not been slacking :o)
The shop will be filled with goodies very, very soon!

Well, I am off to run my errands - remember to check the blog tomorrow for your sunflower pattern and enjoy the day today.

Pimpin' Out Other Designers

I've been told that I am 'harming my own potential sales' by directing my readers to other crochet designers..
but, I am the type of person who gives credit where credit is due.

And while I am currently working on two series/styles of doll - and my time is so limited during the summer months (tough with 'the people' - they are at that age where they need almost constant supervision)... why the heck NOT advertise other designers to my readers and followers?
I am confident in my abilities.. and I am confident in the abilities of others - I don't find it necessary to bash others to make myself look better... so why not share what I personally know about other great designers?

There is a young lady whom I have followed for sometime... mainly because I've got 2 kids who are madly in love with Pokemon'...
Apparently, she's taken the Pokemon' catch phrase of "Gotta Catch em All" and adapted a hooker's sense of uniqueness to it...
"Gotta Hook em All"

To date, OFF THE HOOK's WolfDreamer, has nearly 30 Pokemon' and a whole host of other Gaming Characters for your hooking enjoyment - (Not to mention the adorables  she's got in her Ravelry Shop).
I noticed tonight, that she's completed her latest - Umbreon, which happens to be one of the People's favorite Pokemon.. so guess what I will be doing in my downtime..

Please remember that designers offer free patterns as a courtesy and not a requirement.  You can show your appreciation and support by NOT POSTING gifts to 'share sites' in the hopes of obtaining other patterns - and if you enjoy a designer's work (and there is a donate button), donate a few bucks.  It helps keep the yarn flowing and the creativity alive.

Another Year Older

Thank you so very much, from the bottom of my heart, for all the well wishes and "Happy Birthday" greetings I received last week!  I was truly overwhelmed!  (Especially since I thought I went to such great pains to HIDE the fact that another birthday was approaching... after all, when I was in my early 20's/late teens... I was NEVER gonna be 'THAT OLD').
Hee Hee..

All things considered...
I guess, 40 isn't that bad..
I mean, sure I am older... and the gray hair and crow's feet are becoming ever more prominent...
I don't have the figure I had when I was 20 (oh how I wish for that back!! I still have a closet full of  "In your dreams" size 3 clothing that I am hopeful to wear again...)

But I've got wonderful children and .. well.. the Hub (although at times, I would love to trade him in for a sweet little kitten).. my Momma and my friends..

and of course - birthdays are always good for the sarcastic "wow you don't look a day over 45 comments" from my girl...
or the "Mommy, how old are you now?  17?" (and yes, she is completely serious - as people don't get older than 25 .. ever!)
and the goodies...

and although the Hub caught holy Hell from the guys at work..
"You bought her a what?  Are you Nuts??  Guess you're gonna sleep in the dog house tonight..."  (the G version - hee hee)

it was what I had on my Christmas list for Santa this year...  (secretly, I think the Hub wants me back to a size 3, so all the Victoria Secret and Fredricks of Hollywood crap he's bought me over the years, won't continue to be stuffed in the back of the undies drawer..)
But mostly, I am most grateful for another year to share with my family and friends.. and of course another year to share my fiber family.

Thank you
