CP69 - Daughter Claus Ponytail Cap

My youngest is always looking for something new and unique to show off at school.  So this year, I made some Christmas themed accessories for her.

Sadly, she was not available to model for photos.  Senior life, especially when you're involved with clubs, councils and activities, not to mention the day to day grind of work and social life.. I am just lucky to catch her for a few minutes at dinnertime.
ahhh to be a teenager again!!

but her sister was kind enough to stand in, so I could share the pattern with my doodlers...

A project that works up very quick for that last minute festive touch to add a bit of homemade flair to your holiday wardrobe.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner/ Intermediate
Measurements: 10.5 inches wide - flat/ 7.5 inches tall / 24.5 inch diameter (approx.)
Size: Adult - One Size fits Most
Gauge :  12 rows of 12 single crochet = 3 inches/squared (H Hook)
Yardage :  Main Color: less than 7oz/364yrds, Accent Colors: less than 4oz/202yrds

General Notes:

- This pattern is worked in joined rounds, with an UNCOUNTED, loose ch-1 at the beginning of each Rnd, unless otherwise noted.  This is my preferred method in creating Double Crochet rounds without gaps - however, you may use your preferred method - just insure your count matches mine for the end of each round.
- This pattern utilizes standard US Crochet Terms and has been designed by a Right Handed Crocheter.
- Any changes in materials to this pattern, (hook size/yarn weight) will not produce the measurements above.

Special Stitches:
- This pattern utilizes an Extended Single Crochet (esc) for the first round. You can find a tutorial on how to work the esc here: AA: Beyond Basics Stitches - Extended Single
- This pattern utilizes a Front Post Double Crochet (FpDC) to create the texture in this cap.  You can find a tutorial on how to work the FpDC here: AA: Beyond Basic Stitches - Front Post
- This pattern also utilizes Loop Stitches (LpSt) to create a fuzzy look.  You can find a tutorial on how to make the Loop Stitch here: AA: Beyond Basic Stitches - Loop Stitch
- Recommended that you wait until the final step before cutting loops and brushing out yarn to create the finished look.

CP67 - Love Those Hooters

On this, the final day of FDbyK4TT helping to spread awareness for this year's Breast Cancer Awareness Month; I would be remiss if I didn't share with my readers the most valuable information for breast health.

Not only good diet, healthy habits and regular Mammograms (beginning at age 30 and regularly, once a year, every year there after), but also 'self-checks' MONTHLY.

The link contained within, will help you to provide the best methods for detecting concerns in the breast.

Perhaps the most important part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is not the pretense of saying "hey.. did you know this disease exists" - but to set a 'clock of sorts', to remind everyone to take a single day every October - to check yourself and make sure you are doing all you can to prevent or detect Breast Cancer.
The more you know about your own body - the more likely you are to detect disease early enough to have a positive outcome.

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to whipstitch the top of the Body closed.  With snippets of yarn of all color you've used in the creation of your hooter - add some 'feathers' to each of the corners at the top of the Head area.  Model uses a more 'tassel' like approach to create the head feathers.

Wing: (Make 2)  this item is worked in rounded ROWS with turns - I do not utilize turning chains

Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 6 sc in st (6 sts)
Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to weave through the front loops of round to close opening creating a small bobble - and secure to Head.
OR you can use embroidery or plastic buttons to create eyes.

Beak: (Make 1)
with Gold,

Chain 2, Yarn over (yo), insert the hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, draw the yarn through the stitch, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook, (yo twice, and draw yarn through the 2 lps on the hook, twice) 3 times, yo, draw yarn through 2 lps on hook, yo, draw through all 6 lps on hook, ch-1.
Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to secure Beak between eyes on Owl.

With contrasting color (Baby Pink used in model) embroider some "V" stitches to simulate 'feathers' on belly area of your Owl.

With White, add points of light to the eyes if you used fiber to create them.
Model used a wire brush to 'fuzz out' the head feathers.

Add any other personal touches to create your own version of this project.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Continuing this week with the emphasis on Breast Cancer Awareness.,,
We have lost MANY women to this disease.. the well known, as well as 'that cool lady down the road, who hands out the full-sized candy bars'..

"You hear me
I put a spell on you
Because you're mine"
~ Eunice Kathleen Waymon AKA Nina Simone; dead from Breast Cancer at the age of 70 on April 21, 2003

Some more FAMOUS names you may not have known died of Breast Cancer:

Hattie McDaniel
(Actress/Comedian - best known for: Gone With the Wind)
Ingrid Bergman  (Actress - best known for: Casablanca)
Linda McCartney (Animal Rights Activist/ Wife of Paul McCartney)
Bette Davis (Hollywood Legend/sold $2M worth of bonds in 2 days after bombing of Pearl Harbor )
William McGhee (Actor - best known for: being 1st African American to perform on Dallas stage)
Lynn Redgrave (Actress - best known for: Gods and Monsters)
Vivian Vance (Actress - best known for: Ethel Mertz/I Love Lucy )
V. C. Andrews  (Horror Writer - best known for: Flowers In the Attic)
Jo Ann Davis (Representative in the U.S. Congress)
Susan G. Komen  (Sister of Breast Cancer Activist : Nancy Goodman Brinker)
Rod Roddy (Game Show Host - best known for: The Price is Right)

And to leave you on a more positive note: few 'celebrity survivors' who caught their cancer early enough :
Richard Roundtree - (Actor - Shaft)
Christina Applegate - (Actress - Married w/Children)
Peter Criss - (Musician - KISS Drummer)
Melissa Etheridge - (Singer)
Montel Williams - (Talk Show Personality)
Meredith Baxter - (Actress/Activist)

To those we've lost, as well as those who are survivors - I humbly offer these 'suggestions' for gifts, awareness to those in your life who may need to be more aware of Breast Cancer.
All of these are FREE and have been available for a while; however may have been overlooked, due to different titles or colors used in the original project.

The Hubby Cushion -  Originally created as a "Father's Day gag gift", simple color changes to pinks and white could create a truly obvious "Breast" Pillow or Mastectomy Pillow by 'omitting' one of the breasts.

The Janelle Blanket - Originally created as a Baby Blanket, those going through Chemo (Chemotherapy) will appreciate the warmth of a small 'lap style' blanket over a larger afghan.

Awareness Ribbons - Some may not realize that some time ago, I had put up a complimentary pattern for very simple Awareness Ribbon that can be added to pins, prayer cards, etc.  At under 3 inches, these ribbons can fit a variety of needs.

The Little Love PillowOriginally created as a Valentine's Day treat, those avoiding that first boob squish (Mammogram) or their yearly checkup, could have their appointment made 'for them' by a loving partner, friend or parent, and presented their 'gift' in the pocket of this small pillow.

The Weenie Owl - Originally created as a homage to Harry Potter for a 12 Days of Christmas celebration - simple color changes can transform this "comical hooter" into a meaningful plush for someone who needs a pick me up.

and of course, there are the patterns which have been created specifically for this 'month' and were just recently released

CP66 - Boo - Bees Done & Dusted

Edited : Have to give a shout out to my Aussie Facebook Friend, Lynette Brown, who provided a much better name for these two...
Thank you so much Lynette, for the giggle last night!

We CAN celebrate Halloween, while also spreading Breast Cancer Awareness... with just a little bit of "creative thinking".
These little guys are essentially modifications to Ay & Zhe to create the BOO BEES. ("boobies" as breasts are often called by young children) Little Bumble Bees dressed up as ghosts.  I thought it would also look really cute in a light pink, but thought about it after the fact.

But in sharing the awareness & the holiday, there are some important facts to remember about Breast Cancer.  While breast cancer is not preventable; you can lower your risks with lifestyle modifications.  The more you know about the disease, the more likely you are to seek treatment and have a greater chance of beating Breast Cancer!
