General Notes:
- This pattern is worked in continuous spiral rounds unless otherwise noted.
- This pattern utilizes standard US Crochet Terms.
- I do not utilize 'turning chains' when creating rows of single crochet stitches.  If you find it necessary to ch-1 at turn, this will count as your 1st stitch.

Finish off.  Secure and weave in remaining tail to hide.
Features can vary on each project.  Photo utilizes a ‘corner’ of the Head/Body so in using a long whipstitch to emphasize the corner, creates the appearance of a ‘nose’. Play with your positioning of your Coal’s features to create the optimal look you want.


EYEBALL: (Make 2)
with Dusty Grey,
___ Rnd 1: Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 6 sc in st  (6 sts)
___ Rnd 2: [Inc in nxt st] 6 times  (12 sts)
___ Rnd 3: [sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Inc in nxt st] 3 times  (15 sts)
___ Rnd 4: sc in ea st around  (15 sts)
___ Rnd 5: [sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog] 3 times  (12 sts)
___ Rnd 6: [Dec nxt 2 sts tog] 6 times  (6 sts)
Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to secure Eyeball to Head/Body.


PUPIL: (Make 2)
with Black,
___ Rnd 1: Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 9 sc in st  (9 sts)
___ Rnd 2: [sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Inc in nxt st] 3 times  (12 sts)
___ Rnd 3: in BLO, slst in ea st around  (12 sts)
Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to secure Pupil to Eyeball.
With White, add points of light to each Pupil.


EYELID: (Make 2)
with Charcoal,
Chain 10, 
___ ROW 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in ea of nxt 8 chs, TURN  (9 sts)
___ ROW 2: slst in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, hdc in ea of nxt 3 sts, sc in nxt st, slst in nxt st  (9 sts)
Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to secure Eyelid around Eyeball on Head/Body.
Play with positioning as this will change your piece of coal’s facial expression.


HAT: (Make 1)
with Cherry Red,
___ Rnd 1: Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 6 sc in st  (6 sts)

___ Rnd 1: join with slst in 1st unworked loop remaining from Rnd 34, (ch-3, slst in nxt st) 41 times, ch-3
___ Rnd 2: (slst in nxt unworked loop, ch-2, slst in same st, ch-2,  slst in same st, ch-2) 42 times
___ Rnd 3: working in the FLO of Rnd 36 of Hat, (slst in nxt st, ch-3) 41 times, ch-3, slst in same st as 1st st made this round.
Finish off.  Secure and weave in tail to hide.


HAT BALL:
with White,
___ Rnd 1: Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 9 sc in st  (9 sts)
___ Rnd 2: in BLO, [Inc in nxt st] 9 times  (18 sts)
___ Rnds 3-5: in BLO, sc in ea st around  (18 sts/ea rnd)
___ Rnd 6: in BLO, [Dec nxt 2 sts tog] 9 times  (9 sts)
Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to secure Hat Ball to end of Hat.
Finishing:  with White, join with slst in 1st unworked loop remaining from Rnd 1, (ch-3, slst in nxt st) 9 times, for nxt rnd, work the (slst in nxt unworked loop, ch-2, slst in same st, ch-2, slst in same st, ch-2) around, and alternate ea round, between the ch-3 and multiple ch-2 combinations until you run out of unworked loops.  Finish off.  
Secure and weave in tail to hide.


COAL DUST: (Make Various) Model uses 3
with Charcoal,
___ Rnd 1: Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 6 sc in st  (6 sts)
___ Rnd 2: [sc in nxt st, Inc in nxt st] 3 times  (9 sts)
___ Rnd 3: [sc in nxt st, Dec nxt 2 sts tog] 3 times, slst in nxt st, Chain 11, (yo, draw up a loop in 3rd ch from hook, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook) – 2 loops on hook,  repeat ( to ) in same ch – 3 loops on hook, repeat ( to ) in same ch – 4 loops on hook, yo, draw through all 4 loops on hook, slst in same ch, (slst, ch-2, slst) in nxt ch, skp ea of nxt 2 chs, (yo, draw up a loop in nxt ch, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook) – 2 loops on hook,  repeat ( to ) in same ch  – 3 loops on hook, repeat ( to ) in same ch – 4 loops on hook, yo, draw through all 4 loops on hook, slst in same ch, (slst, ch-2, slst) in nxt ch, skp ea of nxt 2 chs, (yo, draw up a loop in nxt ch, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook) – 2 loops on hook,  repeat ( to ) in same ch  – 3 loops on hook, repeat ( to ) in same ch – 4 loops on hook, yo, draw through all 4 loops on hook, slst in same ch.
