Pattern: Beginner
Materials Used in Model:
Red Heart® Classic® WW 4-Ply Yarn in 0320 Cornmeal, 0321 Gold, 0365 Coffee, 0334 Buff and 0311 White
4mm eyes
poly-fil fiberfill
Size US G/6-4.25mm crochet hook (US)
Crochet Needle for sewing
Long Straight Pins for positioning

Terms Used and their Meanings:
ch - chain
Dec - Decrease
Inc - Increase
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
nxt - next
st or sts - stitch
ea - each
tog - together
M/M - Marker Moved or Move Marker
* all Inc and Dec are single crochet unless indicated otherwise. Pattern is worked in continuous rounds, without joining, unless noted.

The Chicken

Head (Make 1):
with Cornmeal,
Rnd 1: Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 6 sc in st  (6 sts)
Rnd 2: [Inc in nxt st] 6 times  (12 sts)
Rnd 3: [sc in nxt st, Inc in nxt st] 6 times  (18 sts)
Rnd 4: [sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Inc in nxt st] 6 times  (24 sts)
Rnd 5: [sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Inc in nxt st] 4 times  (28 sts)
Rnd 6: [sc in ea of nxt 6 sts, Inc in nxt st] 4 times  (32 sts)
Rnds 7-8: sc in ea st around  (32 sts/ea rnd)
Rnd 9: [sc in ea of nxt 14 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog] twice  (30 sts)
Rnd 10: [sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog] 6 times  (24 sts)
Rnd 11: [sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog] 6 times  (18 sts)

Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to secure head to body.  Model's Eyes are placed between rnds 8 & 9 and spaced about 5 sts apart.

Beak (Make 1):
with Gold,
Chain 2,
Row 1: sc 3 times into 2nd ch from hook, ch-1, turn  (3 sts)
Row 2: (sc, hdc, sc) in nxt st, sc in nxt st, (sc, hdc, sc) in nxt st  (7 sts)

Finish off, leaving sufficient tail remaining to sew beak together then to face.
Fold beak in half, forming a triangle (beg chain is tip of beak) using a whip stitch, stitch up bottom edge to create a 'cone' (you will see the beak shape form as you work).  Secure open end of beak to face and hide any remaining yarn tail.


Body (Make 1):
with Cornmeal,
Rnd 1: Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 6 sc in st  (6 sts)
Rnd 2: [Inc in nxt st] 6 times  (12 sts)
Rnd 3: [sc in nxt st, Inc in nxt st] 6 times  (18 sts)

Rnd 1: Inc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in nxt st, 4 sc in end ch st - turn piece to allow you to work up the other side of original beg chain (as if a flat round), hdc in nxt st, Inc in last st. (10 sts)
Rnd 2: Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Inc in ea of nxt 2 sts, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Inc in nxt st  (14 sts)
Rnd 3: sc in ea st around  (14 sts)
Rnd 4: sc in ea of nxt 6 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog, M/M  (12 sts)
Rnds 5-6: sc in ea st around  (12 sts/ea rnd)
Rnd 7: [sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog] 3 times  (9 sts)

Rnd 3: sc in ea st around  (16 sts)
Rnd 4: [sc in nxt st, Inc in nxt st] 8 times  (24 sts)
Rnds 5-6: sc in ea st around  (24 sts/ea rnd)
Rnd 7: [sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Inc in nxt st] 4 times  (28 sts)
Rnd 8: sc in ea st around  (28 sts)
