Checking In & Passing It On...

Okay.. so here we are .. something like 43 days until Christmas and I've not got a single 'personal' crochet gift done... as of yet..
several started, but none done.
Can you smell the midnight oil being lit yet?? Hee Hee

Last year's Holiday Donations - Animal Shelter

Last week, the last of the K.I.S.S. Series holiday donations took their 'ride downtown'...
well a few streets over anyways, to the local police station.

And my commissioned pieces have all been mailed off as well..
what a great feeling...  being DONE!
lol

Unfortunately, this year, I simply did not have enough time (or cooperating weather) to get photographs of everything before they were put into their shipping beds and sent along their merry way.  Several were 'due by' Friday, the 26th.  Yeah... I could have held em a day or two more... but.. who really trusts the US Postal Service to deliver in a TIMELY fashion anymore - let alone at 'holiday time'?  I do not take chances with my client's needs. :o)

Now.. it's a Fairy for Momma, some kitty toys for some friends and ... well a few more, but they read my blog.. so ... shhhhhhhhhhhhh
but first.. I've got to figure out what will be taking a trip to the UK this year :o)
The original Maximus traveled overseas and had a great spring, frolicking and playing in the dandelions of the UK last year...

I have added a few new K.I.S.S. Series playmates to the collection.  Right now, there's a total of 12 - which include my newest, a Pegasus (with wing tutorial).

Which brings me to write...
I had one of my wonderful clients let me know of a catastrophe that happened to her K.I.S.S. Lion..
She had completed the lion using "softest superwash wool" and it did not hold up to the washing machine - she wanted to make sure that others did not make her mistake.

Personally, I do not use the more expensive yarns like wool, cashmere or bamboo.  I use good ole, easily found and inexpensive, Red Heart Worsted Weight yarns for all my amigurumi projects -
All Yarns are NOT the Same (unfortunately).

Wow! The Holidays are Here... Already?!?!

It seems like only yesterday, I was listening to my children complain about the heat and wanting to go into the pool!

But here we are, Halloween 2010 is dissolving into just another memory; a big ole' Turkey Dinner with all the trimmings and a Christmas Tree with packages wrapped in brightly colored ribbons and bows - will be on everyone's mind before you know it.  (Sorry - I am a bit  'materialistic' when it comes to the symbolism of this time of year).

hmm.. and Me.. deciding to YANK my children from public school BEFORE the holidays... what was I thinking??!?  (Yeah, that's why the blog disappearing act again - but I am trying to balance everything out and make time for home school, home cleaning, home cooking, home working... hee hee)

But before we completely let Halloween 2010 escape from our memories (at least until next Halloween) - I wanted to show off one of my dear bloggies' works.

Genevieve participated in the Monster C.A.L. and was kind enough to eMail me her finished Monster - he is just A-DOR-ABLE!

I LOVE HIM to pieces!  Thank you so much for sharing him with me!
If you participated in the C.A.L. and would like to show me your completed Monster, I am sure we can extend Halloween a little longer... hee hee...

Well, I have a Math Lesson to prepare and some Creative Writing to read..
so I guess that will have to be it for now.

Checking In ...

Well the People went back to school on Tuesday *yeah*...
okay, so it wasn't that eventful... I do miss them when they are away at school - - -
it's one of those "grass is always greener.." things I suppose.

They are excited!
New friends, old friends, new teachers, familiar staff.. a new swing set on the playground.. and a personal message from the school principle the night before 1st day...
so yeah.. happy kids...  (they actually got up at 3:50am to get ready for the 8:15am bus... )
and happy Mum.. since I am finally able to concentrate on writing up all these patterns.

I have been very busy over that past 2 days getting patterns written up and put into pdf format for sale in my etsy shop - the K.I.S.S. Zebra will be available tomorrow (9/9/10) - I just need to add the photos.

Additionally, I was asked (after completing Dawn Toussaints' CAL) if I would do one..
after much consideration... I WILL be doing a CAL in November!
So make sure to keep watching the blog!

I've got a few specials which I am considering - such as for Christmas Eve.. when you purchase a pattern, the same pattern will be eMailed to the friend as a GIFT.
Just a few things I have had mulling in my brain over my summer hiatus from actively keeping everyone up to date...

Now..

So I was just checking in tonight and I wanted to give a shout out to Goldibug :o) especially since she was so kind to give me a blog award...

So..

7 Things About Me... (that you may/may not know)

1) My best friend(s) who I share ALL my secrets with, have fur

2) I love to watch video games for the 'storyline' and have already pre-ordered Halo Reach (although I personally won't ever play the game)

3)  I often sit on my back porch, with snow falling in my PJs and a Snuggy™

4)  I was a "Hooters Girl"

5) I believe in Ghosts, 'unknown monsters' and aliens (although, I find most people's claims about them to be unbelievable)

6) I have a great deal of respect for spiders, bees and ants - although I do not like to have them near me.

7) I never intended to become a crochet designer - thank you to my testers (DR, DW, LE and KS) for the push into the field.

4 Down - - - ??? To Go...

My children are my biggest source of inspiration - and my biggest supporters .. even if I don't want them to be... :o)

By that, I mean, when they see me hard at work on a crochet piece, they constantly interrupt with a "Mommy, what are you going to make next?"

Mind you now, I've barely got 2 legs and a body done and they are already onto the next piece...

Now usually I say something like, "I just got started on this one - sheesh, I've only got 2 hands!"  which has them scurry away for a little bit...
But if I was to say ... "I'm not sure." or the dreaded "I haven't thought about that yet." I am bombarded with suggestions.. and what's worse - half their collection of stuffed animals.  At this point, I think my room has more of THEIR stuffed animals, than their own rooms do.  From Build-a-Bears to Beanie Babies and everything in between...

I must giggle though - they are so supportive and proud of me.. it just fills me with pride!
These 4 critters have been tested and are currently being typed up for sale in the FiberDoodlesbyK4TT Shop.

Courtesy Pattern : CP09 - Heal The World - With Sunshine

"Heal the world
Make it a better place
For you and for me and the entire human race.
There are people dying
If you care enough for the living
Make a better place for
You and for me.

And the dream we would conceived in
Will reveal a joyful face
And the world we once believed in
Will shine again in grace
Then why do we keep strangling life
Wound this earth, crucify it's soul
Though it's plain to see, this world is heavenly
Be God's glow.

We could fly so high
Let our spirits never die
In my heart I feel
You are all my brothers
Create a world with no fear
Together we'll cry happy tears
See the nations turn
Their swords into plowshares
We could really get there
If you cared enough for the living
Make a little space to make a better place."

I understand not everyone enjoys, or even likes Michael Jackson or his music, but I ask of you today - this day of the 'celebration' of life, to give the gift of L.O.V.E to another.

Please donate today.  Whether donating financially to help a starving child, or to protect endangered wildlife. Donating your time to a local shelter for abused animals or simply picking up the litter that lines the streets -
WE can change this world and make it a better place...
all we have to do is look with our hearts instead of our eyes.

Materials Used:
Red Heart WW Yarns in colors: 0320 Cornmeal, (petals) 0624 TeaLeaf (stem),  0365 Coffee (flower center)
Crochet Hook, size  US E4/3.50 MM
2 foot Roasting Stick (or  2 foot, #2 pencil diameter,  wooden dowel)
4-6 Wooden Bamboo Skewers
6-8 Wooden Popsicle Sticks
Polyester Filler
Sewing Needle
Knitting Needle (or long needle to create opening to insert skewer)
Long Straight Pins for positioning/sewing

Finished flower measures nearly 3 feet in height and almost 12 inches in width.  This, of course, will vary depending on your crocheting gauge and/or tension.  All stitches are worked in a continuous spiral though both loops of previous stitch, using single crochet, unless otherwise noted.
This project is completed in several smaller sections, joined together in a manner which creates one complete project.
Pattern is written in a manner which also displays the easiest way to assemble; creating the bud base of the flower first, then the petals and finally the stem.  Although, you are free to create your pieces in any order that fits your needs.

Bud Base – Face Section (Make 1):
with Coffee,
Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 7 sc in st.
___ Rnd 2:  [Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (14 sts)
___ Rnd 3:  in BLO, [sc in nxt st, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (21 sts)
___ Rnd 4:  in BLO, [sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (28 sts)
___ Rnd5:   in BLO, [sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (35 sts)
___ Rnd 6:  in BLO, [sc in ea of nxt 4 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (42 sts)
___ Rnd 7:  [sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (49 sts)
___ Rnd 8:  sc in ea st around  (49 sts)
Finish off and weave in tail.

Bud Base- Back Section (Make 1):

with TeaLeaf,
Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 7 sc in st.
___ Rnd 2:  [Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (14 sts)
___ Rnd 3:  [sc in nxt st, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (21 sts)
___ Rnd 4:  [sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (28 sts)
___ Rnd5:   [sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (35 sts)
___ Rnd 6:  [sc in ea of nxt 4 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (42 sts)
___ Rnd 7:  [sc in ea of nxt 5 sts, Inc in nxt st] 7 times  (49 sts)
___ Rnd 8:  sc in ea st around  (49 sts)
___ Rnd 9:  [sc in ea of nxt 7 sts, chain 7, slst in 2nd chain from hook and in nxt ch,  sc in nxt st, hdc in nxt st, dc in ea of nxt 2 sts, slst in same st as chain] 7 times
Finish off, leaving enough yarn remaining to sew front and back pieces together – stuff with filling before closing up completely.  Do not stuff too firmly as you will need to insert bamboo skewers through the filler from 1 side to the other to help ensure that pedals remain erect.  Do not stuff too lightly as you will want a ‘puffed’ look to the center of the bud.

Petals (Make 28)
with Cornmeal,
Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 7 sc in st.
___ Rnd 2:  sc in ea st around  (7 sts)
___ Rnd 3:  Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 2 sts, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts  ( 9 sts)
___ Rnds 4-5:  sc in ea st around  (9 sts/ea rnd)
___ Rnd 6:  Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 3 sts, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 4 sts  (11 sts)
___ Rnds 7-9:  sc in ea st around  (11 sts/ea rnd)
___ Rnd 10:  (Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 2 sts) twice, Inc in nxt st, sc in ea of nxt 4 sts  (14 sts)
___ Rnds  11-17:  sc in ea st around  (14 sts/ea rnd)
___ Rnd 18:  sc in ea of nxt 10 sts, (Dec nxt 2 sts tog) twice  (12 sts)
___ Rnd 19:  sc in ea st around  (12 sts)
___ Rnd 20:  sc in ea of nxt 9 sts,  Dec nxt 3 sts tog  (10 sts)
___ Rnd  21: sc in ea st around  (10 sts)
___ Rnd  22:  Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 6 sts, Dec nxt 2 sts tog  (8 sts)
___ Rnd 23:  sc in ea st around  (8 sts)
___ Rnd 24:  Dec nxt 2 sts tog, sc in ea of nxt 6 sts  (7 sts)
Finish off, leaving enough yarn remaining to sew petal to bud base.

Once you have all petals completed, insert popsicle sticks into the center of several petals (# of petals stuffed with popsicle sticks determined by # of skewers used/ 2 petals per skewer).  Using pins, secure petals in a circular pattern to bud base, in 2 rows/ 14 petals per row.
Once you have even spacing and are happy with the aesthetics of petal placement – remove top row, exposing only the back row.  Using a knitting needle, push needle through one side of bud and out the other (creating a tunnel through the filler); follow needle with bamboo skewer. (you will have part of wooden skewer exposed on both sides of bud base)  Do this at least one more time creating a -|- or X type pattern to assist in keeping petals erect.    Model uses 4 skewers to help support the large petals.  Insert skewer into petals stuffed with popsicle sticks - then secure petals to bud base.

Stem (Make 1)

with TeaLeaf,
Using either the [ch 2, begin work in 2nd st from hook] or [magic circle] method to begin project, 7 sc in st.
___ Rnd 2:  in BLO, sc in ea st around  (7 sts)
___ Rnds 3-103: sc in ea st around  (7 sts/ea rnd)

___ ROW 1:  sc in ea of nxt 4 sts, ch-1, turn  (4 sts)
___ Row 2:  sc in ea st across, ch-1, turn  (4 sts)
___ Row 3:  [Dec nxt 2 sts tog] twice  ( 2 sts)
Finish off, leaving enough yarn remaining to sew the stem to the back of the bud base.

Enjoy the Pattern :o)

Remembering you Michael - you are sorely missed
